The last board

A season ends at a horn, and the board goes dark with the numbers still on it. That is the picture this book is built to hold: not a spreadsheet of games, but twenty-four boards, one after another.

This one is the last: Piperton Knights, 2026-03-21, on the road. A one-goal loss, and the bench was still standing at the buzzer.

Built for the family in the bleachers.

Thirty-four pages, in four parts. The season, the games, the bench, the bag. Every one of them counted in periods, because that is the only unit hockey has ever used.

The two pages to open first. The season ladder (05) is the whole year in one look; the period ledger (06) is the one page no other season book has, because it counts the year the way the game is counted - in periods.

How to work this book

Four things to learn, then it is yours

1 · Read the strip

Every game in this book is three blocks - one per period - and every block says the same five things in the same order. Read left to right and you have read the game. Read a season of them and you can see which period this team owns.

P22–1
13 · 8
  • 6:12 #9 Bell (#7, #11)
  • 11:48 #19 Okonjo (#21) PP
  • 14:03 #4 Kessler Tripping 2 min
  • 1 The period. P1, P2, P3 and, if it went that far, OT.
  • 2 The score in that period alone. 2–1 is a period, not a game.
  • 3 Shots. Blue is us, steel is them, both on the same scale across the strip.
  • 4 The numbers under the bars: our shots, their shots.
  • 5 The period’s own events, in clock order: goals with their assists and strength, then penalties.

2 · Count a shift

A shift is one turn on the ice. In the shift strip (page 17) each skater has a row and each shift is one tick, left to right in the order they happened.

#7Junie Park1711.6 min
#9Sasha Bell2214.7 min
#11Nora Whitlock2319.2 min

A red tick is a shift that ended in the penalty box. Nineteen shifts and forty minutes is a normal night for a 12U skater; if the count falls below twelve, ask why.

3 · Work a save percentage

saves ÷ shots against21 ÷ 24= .875Three goals against on twenty-four shots. Nothing else on the scoresheet says as much about a night.

4 · Plus, minus, and the two special teams

Plus/minus is even-strength and short-handed goals only: plus one if you were on the ice when we scored, minus one when they did. A power-play goal counts for neither side, which is why a player can be minus in a 6–1 win.

Power play is goals over opportunities - 16 of 90 this season, 17.8%. The kill is the same arithmetic from the other side: 81.4%.

The shape of it

The rungs are shaded by result, so the season reads as weather before it reads as numbers. Three wins in October, a bad fortnight in November, then eleven points from a possible fourteen in January.

What the ledger says

The third period is the season. 26 goals for and 14 against in the third, and 236 shots to 208 - the only period this team wins both the scoreboard and the shot chart.

The second is the hole. 28 for and 29 against, and level on shots.

What a good power play looks like at 12U. Not tic-tac-toe. Two shots from the point, one body at the top of the crease, and a entry that does not end in a clear. Sixteen from ninety is a real number, and it is the whole difference between 14–7–3 and a losing season.

Why the strips look like that

Seven goals in three periods, and the first block is the one that decided it: three goals on thirteen shots before Kestrel Point had settled.

the period shape · a full first

The middle block is the only one they won. That is what a blowout looks like when it is drawn: not one tall bar, but one period that got away from them.

Game 08, one tick per shift

A period is not the smallest unit. A shift is: forty seconds of ice, a change, and another one. The strip below is the whole bench for that night, in number order.

Reading it. A tick is one turn on the ice, left to right in the order they happened. The two red ticks are shifts that ended in the box - a defender’s and a winger’s, and both of them cost a power play against.

What the grid says

Most of what this team does happens in front of the net, and it happens in the third period: 86 shots from the slot in the third alone, which is why the third period is the one the scoreboard likes.

The point shots are the ones to watch. 4 shots in overtime is a small number and a big tell: this team does not shoot from the line when it is tired.

The scorer. #7 Junie Park, 27 points, and a plus rating on a team that was out-shot for half the season.
The surprise. #24 Imogen Hale, a defenceman, is fifth in scoring on 32 shots - a shooting percentage nobody planned for.
The column to watch. SH% is goals over shots. Anything over 15% at 12U is luck, and it will come down. The players who keep their shot totals are the ones who keep scoring.

What the panels say

The top line flattened, because the top line was already there in October. The story is the third panel and the fifth: a defenceman's points climbing through January, and a fourth-liner who did not score until December and then did not stop.

A small multiple is the only honest way to show five seasons on one page. A single chart with five lines is a puzzle; five charts with one line each is a sentence.

Read it like a scorekeeper. One bad period can lose a goalie four points of save percentage and it will take a month to earn back. That is why the dots are plotted one night at a time and not averaged into a month.

Two goalies, one crease. #1 started seventeen and #30 started seven, and the save percentages are within a point of each other - which is the best thing that can be said about a tandem at this age.
The column nobody reads. MIN is the only honest way to compare goalies: a goalie who plays the close games faces more shots in more minutes. Both of these played real minutes.

Goals by forward line

L135
L216
L317

The top line is not the story. Line two out-scored line three by -1 goals across the season, and did it against the other team's best defence.

What the pairs are for

A pair is not two defencemen; it is one who stays home and one who goes. Pair 1 finished +20 and pair 3 finished +18, and the difference is which of them was on the ice for the second period.

Ice time per game, all skaters: 15.1 minutes. At 12U that is seventeen shifts and a lot of standing at the blue line.

Three things each, written down in October

A goal that is not written down is a wish. Three per player, ticked when they happen - and the ticks are deliberately not a scoreboard: a fourth-liner’s first assist is as big as a first-line hat trick.

The point of the page. At the end of the season nobody remembers the score of game eleven. Everybody remembers whether they got better at the thing they said they would get better at. That is what this page is for, and it is the only page in the book that is about the future.

Twenty-four games, and where to be

Practice nights

Tuesdays and Thursdays, Northline Rink 2, 17:00 to 18:20. Twelve sessions this season, and every one of them is a page in the practice log.

Away games: bus from the school lot at 16:40. Home games: be on the bench side forty minutes before the puck.

The two rinks you will get lost in

Cedar Falls Arena has two pads and the sign says the wrong one. Millbrook Twin Rink has no sign at all - the second pad is round the back, past the zamboni door.

The rule at our house. The bag is packed the night before, in the hallway, with the skates out of it so they dry. A bag packed in the morning is a bag with one skate in it.
And the thing nobody brings. A pencil. This book does not work without one, and there is never one in the rink.

How it went. Three pool wins and a tie, a semi-final won on a third-period goal, and a final lost by one with the goalie pulled for the last forty seconds. Nobody has ever asked what the score was.
What to write down while you are there. The rink, the puck drop time, the score at the end of each period, and the one thing your player did that you want to remember. Everything else is on a website.

Ice time is more than half of it, and it is the one line a family can do something about: shared ice, a later slot, or a rink with a cheaper Thursday.

Write the date, not the feeling. A photograph with no date on it is a photograph of somebody in a jersey. Twenty years from now the score will not matter and the date will.
And one line about each. Six frames, eight milestones, one season - and the next page has room for the eighteen people who made it.
The story behind one of these

The coaches sign too. Coach D. Ostrander and Coach R. Amadi, and whoever ran the clock, and the parent who drove to Millbrook in February.
And the team manager. The Hollis family - who is, in this case, the person holding this book.

Two plus buttons, a period, and the strip beneath the board redraws as you tap. On paper this page would be one pencil and a smudge; on glass it is the only page that does something paper cannot, which is why the iPad edition is print plus one.

What it is not. It is not a league scoresheet - it does not replace the official one, it runs alongside it, in a pocket, so the numbers in this book are yours and not a website's.
